Wings and Empennage:
The wings and empennage are
in fairly good condition. Well ... there is that lil' ole' bullet
hole in the port wing. Yeah ... you see ... I used to fly low along the
shorelines of the San Juan Islands ... and ... apparently ... someone took
umbrage.
Looking at the "entry
wound", I must have been banking fairly hard to starboard when the bad
boy took his shot. The bullet passed over the afterdeck ... just
missing the fuel tank. The "angel on my shoulder" was working
overtime on that flight. Ironically, I never knew I had been shot at
until I did my next preflight, some days later.
Here are the pictures.
Note that the dark stains along the control surface hinges, other moving
joints and the wing root connection beam are caused by regular
application of LPS-2 heavy duty water extracting oil during pre-flight
inspection and regular maintenance. The stains are a good thing.
Here are some photographs.
Some of the pictures may have been taken before the A&P student's
restoration work.
